Do I need planning permission to erect solar panels on my house roof.
Ordinarily erecting solar on a house roof is regarded as ‘permitted development’. However, this is not the case with listed buildings, including in their curtilage or in conservation areas. Please see the Households section for further information.
I live in a listed property. May I install solar panels?
Every listed building situation is different, but generally you are highly unlikely to obtain permission to erect solar panels on a grade I or grade II* property and only on a grade II property in exceptional circumstances e.g. on a flat roof that cannot be viewed. Solar panels may be approved on permitted extensions to grade II listed properties, but are more likely to be on non-listed outbuildings or in the grounds of the property. We recommend that you speak to your District Council planning department before starting a project for their guidance.

My property is old (pre 1930), what should I consider before undertaking any project?
We recommend that you follow Historic England’s advice, which can be found here. You may not regard your property as particularly historic, but much of the advice is appropriate, as you’re likely to have solid walls, draughts, a need for the property to breathe and poor insulation. Our Energy Questionnaire is a good place to start with all projects.
